I have had enlarged tonsils for three months and cant get rid of this mucous in my throat, what could it be?
large tonsils
It could just be your enlarged tonsils, which tend to pool secretions (provide a lot of nooks and crevices). That they are enlarged is indicative that there is already chronic inflammation present. Once these get significantly enlarged they take a long time (several months) to go down. If they don't go down after several months, and they are still bothering you, you might consider tonsillectomy.

My 3 year old daughter has enlarged tonsils and adnoids. what should we do for her to avoid surgery?
maybe nasal steroids
If the enlarged tonsils and adenoids are causing sleep issues such as apnea, recurrent pharyngitis, difficulty in swallowing or eating then a T &A is probably going to be the most effective procedure. Use of intranasal steroids is sometimes helpful. Searching for allergies - such as to mold, dust mites or pet dander can sometimes be very helpful.

My 3 year old daughter has enlarged tonsils and adnoids. what should we do for her to avoid surgery?
No specific actions
The tonsils & adenoids do grow faster than the kids do until the age of 8, with some additive effects due to infection. Some will need tonsils & adenoids removed due to sleep disturbances or chronic infection. In most, the T&A growth stops @ 8 or so but the kid continues to grow & the relative T&A size declines. By adulthood their relative size is similar to that at birth & no problems remain.

Dr. Robert Knox answered:
symptons of enlarged tonsils?
Big Tonsils
Enlarged tonsils may cause voice changes and blockage of airflow during sleep. Most of the time, the swelling goes down after an infection. If just one of your tonsils is enlarged, go see your doctor. Unless there are other problems, generally no treatment is necessary for enlarged tonsils. Not sure? Go see an ENT.

i have enlarged tonsils. do i need them removed?
Not necessarily!
Enlargement of the tonsils is not the true reason for removal. There are guidlines for tonsil removal. Recurrent strep infections (6 per year), recurring episodes of sore throat, inability to clear tonsils of tonsil-liths, foul lbreath and others. If you are having a recurring problem, see your PCP or an ENT.

Severely enlarged tonsils with no pain. Do they have to come out?
No
Enlarged tonsils are removed if they are a chief part of the problem in sleep apnea in adults, or if there is concern of a cancer. They are also removed if you have 5 to 7 infections in a year, or 3 to 5 a year for multiple years, or chronic pain.

Dr. Martin Raff answered:
Info on enlarged tonsils and adenoids please? do they both need to come out?
Possibly
These are organs which help to combat inflammation. When they are enlarged it suggests they are earning their keep by warding off disease. They seldom need to be removed unless they are interfering with other functions or creating problems. If that occurs, see your ENT doctor and ask their opinion. Good luck
